Work Process Description

My work is entirely hand built using scalpels and dental tools

I use P-300 porcelain. The work is left in it's natural coral white color, with a clear over-glaze or celadon fired to cone 9

Some pieces have color stains applied to accent specific details, for example A frog or salamander.

I am inspired by the west Coast forest flora and fauna: flowers, moss, mushrooms, snails, and insects, ect.

At this point in my development i am interested in the minutia of the forest and how i can isolate them in time through the medium of porcelain and stoneware.
  Darrell J. Perfumo

Darrell studied painting and print making at the University of Manitoba School of Fine Arts, and has been working with various clay media since 1978. Currently, his sculpture is sold in B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario.

Darrell uses porcelain and stoneware to interpret the flora and fauna of the West Coast forests. He enjoys watching snails, frogs, and insects, and is fascinated by the delicacy of their microcosmic worlds. By isolating twists of bark, tree stumps or toad stools as stages for their fragile dances he hopes to convey an essential beauty.

While rooted in the natural world, his work is also an intermingling of fantasy and reality. West Coast Gnomes populate the forests and valleys of imagined lands. Their carefree faces conjure reminiscences of our own simpler past.
Darrell's Studio Is located on Mayne Island and his works are availabe at the En-Vision Gallery on Mayne.
